Neckerchief Tutorial – View B

This tutorial will show you how to make a slightly fancier type of neckerchief to go along with your school seifukus and other sailor collar garments!  The process is very close to View A as well as being bit similar to our bow tutorial, so let’s get to it!

Materials Needed for View B:

  • Neckerchief Pattern Piece 1 & 2
  • ¾ yd. matte satin
  • ½ yd sheerweight or featherweight interfacing
  • Matching Thread
  • Sew on snaps (Size 1)
  • Hand sewing needle
  • A point turner or chopstick

NOTE: All seam allowances are ½ inch.

Cut out two pieces of Piece 1 & 2 on the fold of your fabric and one of Piece 1 & 2 on the fold of your interfacing.  Following the manufacturer’s instructions, fuse your interfacing to the wrong sides of 2 of your fabric pieces.

Pin together 1 fabric section and 1 interfaced section so you have 2 separate pieces.  Mark a 1 inch opening at the middle of each piece.

Starting from one opening mark, sew a ½ inch seam, pivoting at the points.

Clip the pointed ends, notch and trim your the seams so that they will lay smoothly.

Turn the pieces right side out and use a point turner or chopstick to ensure the ends are fully extended and then press your pieces nice and flat.

Next, close up your opening by either topstitching on the machine or slip stitching by hand. These stitches will be hidden by the knot so either way is perfectly fine. With the interfaced piece on the bottom, fold each piece in half, and then fold the ends back to just slightly above the fold, then back down again to meet the fold as shown.

At this point you can tack each piece together, then tack them together at the middle point to create the neckerchief.

Next, cut a rectangular piece that is at least 4 inches by 5 inches. This will be your knot.  Fold the rectangle lengthwise and sew down the edge.

Press the seam flat and trim it down, then turn it right side out.

Place the end of the knot at the center back of the neckerchief with the right side down.  Whipstitch this in place, then wrap the knot around the neckerchief meeting back in the middle and whipstitch that down to secure it.

Add snaps to the tips of the Piece 1 section of the neckerchief, and to your seifuku shirt just under the collar to finish!
